Greene County TOP finishes year with successful fundraiser

Teen Outreach ProgramGreene County High School Health II students finished their trimester of service learning with a Valentine fundraiser for the American Heart Association.

Students planned the project, designed a marketing campaign, assembled packages and sold the candy, heart balloons and/or stuffed animals during their lunch hours and in-between classes. The Teen Outreach Program (TOP®) class voted to give all of the $302.68 in profits to the American Heart Association. This was just one of many service learning projects completed by class members, who clocked more than 500 hours.

“Working with the students in Health II has been a great experience for all of us. In reflecting on our accomplishments this trimester, we realized how much we did, especially in service learning projects around the community”, according to Vicki Gustafson, teacher and TOP® facilitator. “One of our favorites was visiting, playing games and decorating cookies with the residents at Greene County long term care. We also did some in- depth studies of illnesses, diseases, and health problems of adults and children as well as mental illnesses.”

The TOP® classes in the alternative school and high school will begin again in the fall. For more information, contact Peg Dohrer with New Opportunities at pdohrer@newopp.org or 712-792-9266.

“The TOP® program would like to extend a huge thank you to Greene County for making this program possible” said Dohrer, TOP® project director.
